Pilgrim Mass 2026

‘Pilgrim Mass is like a class reunion.’

With these words, Frank Karpa, pilgrim pastor of the North Church, welcomed us at the opening service in St. Katharinen. And indeed, anyone walking through the pews heard this comparison again and again. But is it really true?

I have never experienced a class reunion that facilitates so many heart-to-heart encounters. No meeting that releases so much inspiration, opens up so many new perspectives and sets so much movement in motion. If anything, it is more like an international school reunion or an inclusive school with a focus on movement and spirituality.

Our stand – and what can grow from it

As the Ecumenical Pilgrimage Initiative of Vorpommern, we were once again represented with our own stand.

As a pastor for deaf pastoral care, Ellen Nemitz contributed valuable ideas and offers for pilgrims with deaf people.

I myself was there in my new role as a consultant for innovative pilgrimage formats. Two things took centre stage: twelve bookmarks with ideas and blessings for short pilgrimage breaks in everyday life and a 30-minute workshop on developing mini pilgrimage formats.

With around 50 participants, the workshop was overwhelmingly well attended. And I was impressed by the response. Business cards were exchanged, ideas were developed further, projects were conceived, and I am sure that numerous new projects will grow out of this.
